Tapo Canyon, Natural canyon in Simi Valley, United States.
Tapo Canyon is a natural area in the western Santa Susana Mountains, extending across about 210 acres with elevations reaching 2,300 feet (700 meters). The landscape mixes open hillsides with forested sections, creating varied terrain and views across the surrounding mountains.
This area was once partially covered by the Pacific Ocean, which left marine sediments still visible in the northern sections today. These geological layers tell the story of how dramatically the landscape has shifted over time.
The name comes from Ta'apu, a Chumashan-Ventureño word tied to a Chumash village that thrived here for thousands of years. This connection to Native American roots remains visible in how the land is recognized and spoken about today.
The best time to visit is during cooler months when trails are easiest to navigate and visibility is good. Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes, as paths can be uneven and the terrain gets very dry in summer.
The canyon was a primary filming location during the 1970s for a television series that gained worldwide recognition. This Hollywood connection shaped how many people discovered and remember the place.
