Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge

Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge spans 2,471 acres of grasslands, oak groves, and chaparral within the Topatopa Mountains of Southern California.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service established this protected area in 1974 to safeguard the California condor population and its natural habitat.

The refuge functions as an educational center where researchers study and monitor California condor behaviors and population dynamics in their natural environment.

Access to the refuge requires advance permission through hoppermountain@fws.gov, as the entrance road crosses private property and visitor numbers are controlled.

The refuge contains a California black walnut community, recognized in the State Natural Heritage Database as an exceptional plant formation in California.
