Ventura County, Administrative county in Southern California, US.
Ventura County stretches across 2,208 square miles (5,719 square kilometers) between the Pacific coast and inland mountain ranges, alternating between coastal zones, valleys, and wooded highlands. The Santa Clara River crosses the area from east to west, eventually reaching the ocean.
This territory separated from the southern part of Santa Barbara County on January 1, 1873, and took its name from Mission San Buenaventura. Father Serra had founded that mission in the late 18th century, shaping the later naming choice.
The Chumash people maintained complex societies throughout the region for over 10,000 years, developing advanced fishing techniques and trading networks.
The Hall of Administration offers various public services and opens Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, with telephone appointments available. Coastal roads and mountain passes can become harder to drive during fog or strong winds.
The oilfield along Ventura Avenue began producing crude in 1919 and reached a daily output of 90,000 barrels at one point, fundamentally changing the local economy. Today, scattered derricks still recall that phase of industrial development.
