Colossus, Wooden roller coaster in Valencia, California.
Colossus is a wooden roller coaster at Magic Mountain with two separate track sections, each stretching over 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) of rail. The structure features two lift hills and multiple high-speed drops along its racing layout.
International Amusement Devices built Colossus in 1978 as one of the first twin-track wooden roller coasters of its kind. At its opening, it set records as the fastest and tallest wooden coaster with two drops exceeding 100 feet (30 meters).
The roller coaster appeared in popular films during the late 1970s, including National Lampoon's Vacation, which cemented its place in entertainment history. This film presence helped make it a recognizable symbol of that era's amusement park culture.
Access is through the main Magic Mountain park grounds and is clearly marked throughout the area. Visitors should expect longer wait times on hot days, particularly during busy weekend periods when crowds tend to gather.
The twisting layout allows two trains to run at the same time on separate tracks, creating a racing sensation between them. When dispatch timing aligns correctly, the two coasters nearly pass each other, giving riders the thrill of competing in a high-speed duel.
