Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, State recreation area in Los Angeles County, US.
Castaic Lake State Recreation Area is a state park in Los Angeles County, California, built around two reservoirs: the main upper lake and the smaller Afterbay below it. The site has boat launches, picnic areas, swimming sections, and open shoreline spread across both water bodies.
The dam that filled the main lake was completed in the 1970s as part of the California State Water Project, a system built to move water from the north of the state to the south. Shortly after construction ended, the area was designated as a state recreation site and opened to the public.
Castaic Lake is known among fishing communities as one of the better spots in Southern California for striped bass, and anglers return here season after season. On weekends, the shoreline fills with families, kayakers, and water skiers all sharing the same stretch of water.
The upper lake and the Afterbay each have separate entry points, so it helps to check which section suits your activity before heading out. Parking fills up quickly on summer weekends, so an early arrival makes the visit more comfortable.
Castaic Lake was the site of a world record striped bass catch in 1991, when a fish weighing over 33 lb (about 15 kg) was pulled from these waters. That single catch put the lake on the map for anglers far beyond California.
