Indian Wells is a city in Riverside County within California's Coachella Valley, spreading across roughly 38 square kilometers of desert landscape. Golf courses, resorts and residential neighborhoods shape the appearance of the city at an elevation of about 27 meters.
A water source used by the Cahuilla people gave the city its name and served the region since the 1820s. The present-day city formed in 1967 through incorporation with its own charter.
The BNP Paribas Open brings tennis players from around the world to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden each year. During the tournament, the otherwise quiet residential area becomes a meeting point for sports fans.
The city lies roughly 190 kilometers east of Los Angeles in the southern California desert. Summer temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), while winters remain mild and dry.
Dwight D. Eisenhower chose a home in the Eldorado community as his residence during his final years. The former president spent his time there after leaving office.
