Coachella, Desert city in Riverside County, California.
Coachella is a city in Riverside County, Southern California, lying 20 meters below sea level in the Colorado Desert. Agricultural fields surround the easternmost settlement of the Coachella Valley, where date palms and other crops thrive.
The settlement began in 1876 as Woodspur when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a rail siding. Official incorporation as a city took place in 1946 following a vote by residents.
The name stems from a misspelling of 'conchilla,' small white snail shells found in the soil from an ancient lake bed. Spanish is an official municipal language alongside English, reflecting the strong Hispanic roots of daily life.
Multiple parks, community centers, and golf courses offer recreation options for visitors and residents. A boxing club and sports facilities complement the municipal leisure infrastructure throughout the area.
The settlement sits on an ancient lake bed, evidenced by numerous small white snail shells in the soil. These shells gave the city its name through a mistaken Spanish translation of the word for little shells.
