Native Yuman tribes inhabited the area before European colonization, leading to the current name derived from their presence in the region.
The dunes gained recognition in cinema, appearing as the desert planet Tatooine in Return of the Jedi and serving as locations for numerous other films.

The dune system contains specialized plant species like the Peirson's milkvetch, which only grows in specific rainfall conditions within this desert environment.
