The Imperial National Wildlife Refuge spans 25,768 acres, protecting wildlife habitats along 30 miles of the lower Colorado River between Arizona and California.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established this refuge in 1941 through Executive Order 8685 to safeguard the last natural section of the Colorado River.
The Painted Desert Trail extends 1.3 miles as a National Recreation Trail, introducing visitors to native desert plants and Colorado River valley perspectives.
The refuge visitor center operates Thursday through Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM, while the outdoor areas remain accessible from sunrise to sunset.
The refuge includes backwater lakes and wetlands that create green environments in the desert, supporting wildlife despite temperatures reaching 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
