Imperial National Wildlife Refuge, Nature reserve along Colorado River, Arizona and California, US.
Imperial National Wildlife Refuge is a large nature reserve that stretches along the Colorado River between Arizona and California, protecting diverse habitats. The area includes wetlands, backwater lakes, and riparian forests that support numerous bird and fish species.
The refuge was established in the 1940s to protect the last remaining natural section of the Colorado River from further alteration. This protected area became part of a broader effort to preserve wilderness across the Southwest.
The Painted Desert Trail extends 1.3 miles as a National Recreation Trail, introducing visitors to native desert plants and Colorado River valley perspectives.
The visitor center provides information and is open on select days, while the natural areas are accessible during daylight hours. Visitors should bring plenty of water and prepare for extreme heat.
The river itself is dammed in several places, creating quiet lakes where you can watch water birds that would not otherwise exist in this desert. These artificial waters support an unexpected ecosystem in the middle of dry landscape.
