Picacho State Recreation Area, State recreation area along Colorado River, Imperial County, US.
Picacho State Recreation Area is a California state park located along the lower Colorado River in Imperial County, near the border with Arizona. It offers riverside campsites, boat launch ramps, picnic areas, and basic shower facilities spread along the riverbank.
In the early 1900s, the area was used for mining, with ore processed from sources nearby along the river. When those operations closed, the land was gradually turned into the recreational area it is today.
The river draws migratory birds each year, and ducks, geese, and other waterfowl use the shallow banks to rest and feed during their journeys. Watching this movement of birds along the water is something many visitors notice without expecting it.
The area is reached by a long dirt road, so a high-clearance vehicle is a good idea before heading out. Fishing and boating are most practical in the warmer months, though the park stays open all year.
Despite being deep inland, this stretch of the Colorado River holds fish species like Striped Bass that are more commonly associated with coastal waters. Anglers who fish here for the first time are often caught off guard by what they pull up.
