South Baldy, Mountain summit in the Magdalena Mountains, New Mexico, US

South Baldy is the highest peak in the Magdalena Mountains and rises well above the surrounding ridges and valleys. The mountain is accessed by several hiking trails and a dirt road system that connect to different starting points in the area.

The peak gained scientific prominence in the mid-20th century when researchers established a laboratory near the summit to study atmospheric conditions. This early research station led to further scientific projects in the area over time.

The peak is the site of an annual mountain bike ascent race up the Langmuir Road, held as part of the Tour of Socorro. The dirt road to the Langmuir Laboratory also gives most visitors their first easy route to the summit.

The climb is most feasible during warmer months when roads and trails are dry and passable. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and bring adequate water and gear, as the high elevation and exposed terrain can shift conditions quickly.

The peak hosts an international observatory project with multiple telescopes that function together as one giant virtual instrument. This facility allows astronomers to examine celestial objects with extraordinary detail and precision.
