Playa Zicatela

Playa Zicatela is a beach that stretches for several kilometers along the coast and is known for its powerful waves. The waters here feature consistent breaks that form throughout the year, shaped by the ocean's natural dynamics.

The region started as a small port area linked to coffee shipping in the 20th century. It grew into a settled community after water infrastructure was developed to support permanent habitation.

The name comes from the Nahuatl language and means 'place of large thorns,' reflecting the indigenous roots of the Oaxaca region. Local people continue to use and honor this original name in daily conversation.

The area has many lodging choices right along the beach, ranging from basic to more comfortable options. Restaurants line the coast and are easily reached on foot for meals and refreshments.
