Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, Performing arts center in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias is a performing arts center in Guatemala City containing several distinct performance spaces. The main stage is named Efraín Recinos, along with a smaller chamber theater and outdoor areas for events.

The center opened in 1978, replacing the ruins of a Spanish fort formerly called Fuerte de San José. This transformation marked a turning point in Guatemala's artistic infrastructure and cultural offerings.

The Marimba Institute housed within the complex teaches and performs traditional Guatemalan music. You can hear this distinctive wooden instrument resonating through the spaces, reflecting something central to local identity.

The complex is centrally located and easily reached on foot or by local transportation. Plan to check ahead about event schedules and access times, as these can vary throughout the year.

The building's shape was deliberately designed by architect Efraín Recinos to resemble a seated jaguar, blending modern architecture with local symbols. This detail often goes unnoticed by visitors walking through the site.
