The facility served as a strategic asset during the 1969 Football War between Honduras and El Salvador, marking its significance in regional conflicts.
Since December 2021 international flights have moved to Comayagua International Airport, while this location continues to serve domestic routes. The passenger terminals offer standard facilities for travelers moving within the country.
The location among mountains requires pilots to perform precise steering maneuvers during approach and landing. Navigation techniques for Runway 02 direction follow special procedures to safely manage the descent into the valley.
