Honduras, Central American country between Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Caribbean Sea
Honduras is a Central American nation between Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Caribbean, stretching across mountain chains, valleys and coastal plains. Over one hundred protected areas safeguard tropical rainforests, coral reefs along the Caribbean shore and cloud forests in the highlands.
The Maya civilization built stone temples, pyramids and hieroglyphic inscriptions at Copan between the 5th and 9th centuries. Spanish conquerors reached the territory in 1524, followed by three centuries of colonial rule before the nation became sovereign in 1838.
Garifuna communities along the northern coast keep their music alive through drums, rattles and call-and-response vocals, while colonial churches and craft workshops shape everyday life inland. Spanish, African and indigenous traditions merge in festivals, local dishes and religious customs across the territory.
The Lempira serves as national currency, with exchange offices and banks in larger cities like Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. The dry season from November through April offers better travel conditions, while domestic flights and buses connect the regions.
The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve shelters four different ecosystems within tropical rainforest along with numerous endangered species. The reserve also protects petroglyphs and pre-Columbian settlements dating between 1000 BCE and 1500 CE.

Honduras holds a range of natural sites and archaeological locations along its Caribbean coastline and mountainous interior. The Copán ruins stand among the most important remnants of the Mayan civilization, displaying intricate stonework and the Hieroglyphic Stairway. Several islands in the Bay Islands, including Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja, offer sandy shores and access to coral reefs. National parks such as Pico Bonito, La Tigra, and Celaque protect rainforests and mountain ecosystems with trails through dense vegetation. Lake Yojoa sits between forested hills and serves as a habitat for migratory birds. The capital city of Tegucigalpa contains the 18th-century cathedral, along with the Museum for National Identity and the Garífuna Cultural Center, which provide insight into the country's history and culture. The Christ of Picacho statue overlooks the city from a hilltop. Along the northern coast, the Lancetilla Botanical Garden in Tela holds collections of tropical plants. Protected areas like the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve and the Moskitia region in the east preserve remote rainforests and wetlands. Cayos Cochinos consists of small islands with clear waters off the coast near La Ceiba.
