Colón Department, Administrative department in northeastern Honduras

Colón Department is an administrative region in northeastern Honduras stretching along the Caribbean coast with extensive rainforest. The area contains ten municipalities spread across both coastal strips and forested interior lands.

Spanish colonizers built Fort Santa Barbara in Trujillo, establishing a major stronghold in the region. The settlement later became the site of a notable execution in 1860 that marked a turning point in regional history.

The Garifuna communities scattered along the coast maintain their distinctive traditions through celebrations and daily customs. You can observe these practices woven into the rhythm of local life and the character of the region.

The region is defined by agricultural land and natural vegetation, with soil used for growing bananas, coconuts, coffee, tobacco, and sugarcane. Visitors should expect humid tropical weather and varying road conditions outside the main centers.

Trujillo, the main city here, was the location of the first Catholic mass celebrated on mainland Americas in 1502. This moment marked an early point of religious encounter between European clergy and the newly contacted lands.
