Atlántida Department, Administrative department in northern Honduras
Atlántida Department stretches along the Caribbean coast in the north, combining mountain ranges with flat coastal plains crossed by several rivers. La Ceiba serves as the administrative hub and largest center, while eight smaller municipalities together shape the region.
The region was created in 1902 when sections from neighboring Colón, Cortés, and Yoro departments were combined. Since then it developed into an economically important center, particularly through banana cultivation and coastal trade.
The region reflects Caribbean coastal traditions with strong African and Creole influences visible in local music, speech patterns, and festivals. Spanish, English, and Garinague are all spoken in daily life, shaping how communities interact and celebrate together.
The best time to visit is during the dry season when roads and trails are more accessible. La Ceiba on the coast serves as the main hub for transportation and lodging, making it the gateway to reaching all parts of the department.
The area contains Pico Bonito, a distinctive mountain in the Sierra Nombre de Dios range, known for its cloud forests and rare plant species. This peak attracts hikers seeking to explore the mountain's unique vegetation and views toward the Caribbean.
