Olancho Department

Olancho is a large administrative region in central-eastern Honduras characterized by mountains, plains, and dense forests. The area spans across multiple municipalities and diverse terrain throughout.

The region gained its status as an administrative division shortly after Honduras broke away from Spanish colonial rule in the early 1820s. This early establishment made it a foundational part of the country's territorial organization.

A main highway connects the regional capital of Juticalpa with the national capital Tegucigalpa and serves as the primary transportation corridor. This route makes travel and trade possible across the territory.

Near Catacamas are the Talgua Caves containing ancient burial sites where mineral deposits create a natural glow around skeletal remains. This geological phenomenon makes this archaeological location particularly noteworthy.
