Gracias a Dios Department, Administrative department in eastern Honduras
Gracias a Dios is an administrative department in eastern Honduras, spanning broad areas of tropical rainforests, pine forests, and coastal lagoon systems. The terrain is shaped by dense vegetation and numerous waterways that crisscross the landscape.
This department was established in 1957 when it was separated from the Mosquitia territory and given its own administrative status. Brus Laguna initially served as the administrative center before the seat of government moved to Puerto Lempira.
The Miskito community forms the majority of the population and their languages, crafts, and ways of life remain central to how people here move through daily routines. You will see these traditions reflected in local markets, fishing practices, and family gatherings.
Most travelers reach this region by air through local airlines, as road networks are severely limited due to dense forests and waterways. Plan for longer travel times and be prepared for limited overland transportation options.
The Caratasca Lagoon is the largest lagoon system in the country and stretches along the Caribbean coast with significant breadth. This water system has long served local communities as a source for fishing and remains an important habitat for wildlife.
