Big Corn Island, Caribbean island near Nicaragua coast.
The island spans 10 square kilometers with Mount Pleasant Hill rising 113 meters above Caribbean waters and sandy beaches along its perimeter.
British control of the island lasted from 1655 to 1894, followed by a transfer to Nicaragua and a subsequent 99-year lease to the United States.
The population comprises English-speaking Creole communities who maintain African and British traditions through their music, food, and daily customs.
Visitors reach the island via La Costeña Airlines flights from Managua or boats from Bluefields, with local transportation available through taxis and buses.
Local baseball games occur every Sunday, bringing together residents for competitive matches between men and women teams on the island fields.
