Big Corn Island is a Caribbean island off Nicaragua's coast covering about 10 square kilometers. Mount Pleasant Hill rises about 113 meters above sea level and is surrounded by sandy beaches.
The island was under British control from 1655 to 1894 before being transferred to Nicaragua. A 99-year lease agreement with the United States followed.
The community speaks primarily English and maintains African and British traditions through music, food, and daily life. Visitors notice these influences directly in local restaurants and conversations with residents.
The island is accessible by air from Managua or by boat from Bluefields. Local taxis and buses serve transportation around the island.
Local baseball games happen every Sunday with separate matches for men and women. These gatherings are a living part of community life.
