Tortuguero Volcano, Extinct volcano in Limón Province, Costa Rica.
Tortuguero Volcano is an extinct peak in Limón Province that rises about 119 meters above sea level. One side of it has been modified by canal construction that cuts through the flat, rainforest-covered landscape of the Caribbean region.
The volcano formed through geological processes over millions of years that shaped the Caribbean coastline of Costa Rica. This ancient volcanic activity laid the foundation for the landscape features seen in the region today.
The name comes from the sea turtles that nest on nearby beaches. Visitors walking through the area may encounter signs of these animals in their natural habitat.
The location is reachable only by boat or small aircraft, as the surrounding rainforest limits ground access to the area. Visitors should prepare for wet, tropical conditions and bring appropriate gear.
The volcano sits within a protected corridor stretching from Costa Rica to the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve in Nicaragua. This cross-border conservation area allows wildlife to move freely between the two countries.
