Our Lady of Carmel Cathedral, Cartago

Our Lady of Carmel Cathedral is a neoclassical structure at the heart of Cartago with a central nave flanked by two side aisles beneath a white facade. The three-part interior layout and light materials give the building its distinctive character.

Construction took place between 1954 and 1960 as a parish church under Father Enrique Bolanos and was designed by architect Jose Maria Barrantes. The building was later elevated to cathedral status for the Diocese of Cartago.

The cathedral serves as the principal religious hub for the Diocese of Cartago and shapes the spiritual life of the city. It draws believers for worship and celebrations that reflect the faith community's values and traditions.

The building opens daily to visitors and maintains regular worship services. Allow time for a quiet visit and be aware that access may be limited during religious ceremonies.

Despite its religious importance, this structure often remains overshadowed by the more famous Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, even though it plays a vital architectural and spiritual role. Many visitors passing through the city overlook this significance.
