Melico Salazar Theatre, Theater venue in downtown San José, Costa Rica
The Melico Salazar Theatre is a downtown San José theater designed in European Baroque style with Corinthian columns and decorative elements created by Catalan artist Gerardo Rovira. The venue features multiple levels accommodating approximately 2,700 spectators for theatrical productions, concerts, and operatic performances.
The building opened in 1928 under the name Raventós Theater and was acquired and renovated by the government following a destructive fire in 1967. Its reopening in 1986 included a renaming to honor Costa Rican tenor Manuel Salazar.
The Ministry of Culture designated this venue as a specialized cultural institution in 1986, establishing it as a primary home for performing arts in the country. Visitors experience a blend of local artistic heritage and international productions here.
The venue is located in San José's central zone and is easily accessible by public transit, with several bus lines nearby. Arriving early allows time to explore the lobby and architectural details before your performance begins.
The theater was originally designed as a private venue when it opened in 1928 before being converted into a public cultural institution. This transformation made the elaborate Baroque elements accessible to the general public.
