Maroy Building, Historical building in central San José, Costa Rica.
The Maroy Building is a structure in central San José featuring a concrete dome and prominent balconies with supporting columns throughout its facade. Three stone lions sit above the entrance portico as a defining architectural detail.
The building went up in 1923 on the spot where the newspaper La Información once stood before it burned in 1919 during an uprising against Federico Tinoco's rule. This site thus carries memory of the city's resistance and renewal.
The building shows neoclassical design that helped shape the look of San José's center during the early 1900s.
The building sits at the corner of Calle 3 and Avenida 1 in an easy-to-reach location with several parks nearby. You can walk to Morazán Park and the Metropolitan La Sabana Park from this spot.
The dome was built using concrete techniques that were quite advanced for the 1920s when it was constructed. This engineering choice quietly shows how modern the builders were thinking at that time.
