Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park, Protected marine area in Providencia Island, Colombia
Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park protects a marine area with coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows along the northeast coast of Providencia Island. The park covers several square kilometers and includes both shallow waters and deeper sections with diverse underwater life.
The protected area was established in 1995 and later recognized as part of the UNESCO Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. This recognition strengthened international conservation efforts for this unique marine space in the Caribbean.
The area was historically shaped by fishing families who still maintain their traditional practices today. Local people actively participate in protecting the marine environment and work alongside conservation organizations in this effort.
The best time to visit is during the drier months when water clarity is better and conditions for snorkeling and diving are more favorable. To get there, visitors can take a short flight from San Andres or contact local operators to arrange boat tours.
The park sits over parts of the Caribbean's second-largest barrier reef system, which creates a spectrum of water colors through varied coral formations. This color variation is especially visible from above and makes the location highly valued by divers and snorkelers.
