Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica
The 9,969-hectare refuge contains marshlands, rainforest, and river habitats, providing a home for numerous species of monkeys, sloths, and over 200 bird types.
The Costa Rican government established Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge in 1984, receiving international recognition as a Ramsar site in 1991 for its ecological importance.
Local residents maintain traditional fishing practices in Rio Frio while supporting conservation efforts through guided nature tours and environmental education programs.
Visitors access the refuge through Los Chiles village, paying an entrance fee of 5 dollars, with boat transportation required during the rainy season.
The waters of Caño Negro shelter the gaspar, a prehistoric fish species that reaches three feet in length and surfaces periodically to breathe air.
