Rio Celeste

Rio Celeste, Natural park in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Description

Rio Celeste is a waterfall located within Tenorio Volcano National Park in Guanacaste, surrounded by dense rainforest. The water falls into a bright blue pool created by mineral content that gives the water its distinctive color.

History

The land originally belonged to the Maleku indigenous people, who regarded the waterfall and river as sacred. Later, the area gained protection as a national park to preserve this natural site.

Culture

The striking blue water comes from a natural mixing of two rivers that creates a mineral suspension visible to the eye. Local guides explain this phenomenon as you walk through the forest, helping visitors understand what makes this place special.

Practical

The hike to the waterfall passes through rainforest with hanging bridges and many steps, requiring moderate fitness. Bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water to make the walk more comfortable.

Did you know?

Two clear rivers meet here with different chemical compositions, and their mixing creates the distinctive blue color through mineral suspension. This natural phenomenon is a rare geological example that few places on Earth can match.
