Monteverde Orchid Garden, Botanical garden in Santa Elena, Costa Rica.
The Monteverde Orchid Garden is a botanical garden in Santa Elena with a large collection of flowering orchids. The plants grow under controlled conditions in greenhouses and open areas, where the humid mountain climate provides ideal conditions.
The garden began with a chance discovery in the forest that inspired the founder to build a collection. The collection opened to visitors in the middle of the 2000s, after the private passion became a public project.
The orchids here come from different regions and show how varied these plants are in nature. Visitors can watch how gardeners care for and cultivate the flowers, giving a sense of the daily work with these delicate plants.
The garden is open daily and offers guided tours that last about three-quarters of an hour. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as you walk on paved paths between the greenhouses.
The garden also houses extremely small orchid species that are only a few centimeters tall and represent a rare specialty. These miniatures show the remarkable variety that exists in nature and are often only discoverable with careful observation.
