Lake Arenal, Reservoir and wetland near Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica
Lake Arenal is a large reservoir and Ramsar-protected wetland situated near Arenal Volcano, covering about 85 square kilometers of water. The lake reaches maximum depths of 30 to 60 meters and is fed by several rivers flowing down from the surrounding mountains.
The original body of water was dramatically enlarged in 1979 through construction of the Sangregado Dam, tripling its surface area. This expansion required two towns to be relocated as their previous settlements were flooded beneath the rising water.
The lake holds deep meaning for local fishing communities, whose families have worked these waters for decades using traditional methods. The fish populations here support a way of life that remains central to the rhythm of surrounding settlements.
The area is best visited between November and April when strong, steady winds blow down from the north. During this time the water conditions are ideal for water sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing, particularly on the northern shore.
The water is used to generate electricity and supplies a meaningful portion of the country's overall power needs. The water surface and surrounding areas support over 300 bird species, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers.
