Parroquia San Rafael Arcángel

Parroquia San Rafael Arcángel is a Catholic church building in the center of San Rafael del Norte, constructed of white stone with a distinctive tall bell tower. The structure displays traditional architectural features and remains an active place of worship for residents.

The community built the first simple adobe chapel in 1862 from local materials and effort. Over time, the structure expanded into the present building through ongoing contributions from residents who enhanced and maintained it.

The stained glass windows were imported from Austria in 1893 and transported by oxen-drawn carts through Nicaragua's mountainous terrain. This remarkable feat shows how remote communities maintained connections to distant places in the 19th century.
