Envigado, Municipality in Antioquia Department, Colombia
Envigado is a municipality in Antioquia Department, Colombia, spreading across the Aburrá Valley and forming part of the metropolitan area around Medellín. Residential neighborhoods alternate with commercial streets and green spaces that reach up to forested slopes.
Spanish families founded the settlement in 1775 and turned it into an agricultural center for the region. During the 20th century the town grew through industry and joined the metropolitan area of Medellín.
The name comes from envidia, a local word for envy, referring to early rivalries among settlers. Today, colonial churches and public squares shape the townscape, where locals gather in the evening to chat.
Buses and trains connect the center with surrounding districts and neighboring towns throughout the day. Many streets run uphill, so comfortable shoes help for longer walks.
Large parts of the municipality lie within protected zones that serve as corridors for endangered animal species. Trails run through these reserves and show visitors the regional biodiversity.
