Moniquirá, Administrative municipality in Boyacá, Colombia
Moniquirá is an administrative municipality in Ricaurte Province located in northern Colombia's highlands. The territory sits at about 1,669 meters elevation and encompasses fertile land with both urban and rural settlements spread across roughly 22,000 hectares.
Before Spanish arrival in 1537, the land belonged to the cacique of Susa as part of the Muisca Confederation. The municipality itself was established in 1825 and has since developed as an agricultural settlement.
The municipality is shaped by farming traditions that define everyday life in the region. Across the landscape, fields of coffee, sugar cane, and corn dot the terrain and connect the community to its agricultural roots.
The municipality sits in the highlands with mountain terrain, so expect variable weather and uneven paths when exploring. It is easier to visit during drier seasons when roads are more accessible and weather is more stable.
The region gained recognition for bocadillo production, traditional guava sweets made in local facilities. These confections represent a significant part of the local economy and employ hundreds of workers in the area.
