Girón, Colonial municipality in Santander, Colombia.
San Juan de Girón is a municipality in the Bucaramanga metropolitan area at about 706 meters elevation, with white-walled buildings and red clay tile roofs lining its streets. The urban layout follows a colonial-era pattern with cobblestone streets and traditional architecture.
The settlement was founded in 1631 but faced hardship from disease and natural disaster, forcing its relocation to the current site in 1638. The new location allowed the community to rebuild with better conditions.
The town center preserves narrow streets with whitewashed houses, brown wooden doors, and wide balconies that residents and visitors navigate daily. These spaces shape how people live and move through their community.
The center is easily accessible on foot, though cobblestone streets require careful walking. Wear sturdy shoes and take time to explore the surroundings at a relaxed pace.
In 2010 the government recognized the town as a Heritage Town and designated it a National Monument for its architectural significance. This official status helps protect and maintain the historic structures for the future.
