Chicamocha Canyon

Chicamocha Canyon is a massive gorge in northeastern Colombia that cuts deep into the landscape, with limestone cliffs rising on both sides. The walls reach extreme depths and create a dramatic geological formation that stretches across the region.

The canyon took shape millions of years ago through tectonic activity and river erosion that gradually carved the landscape. Over countless geological periods, these natural forces created the deep valley and steep cliffs visible today.

The Guane indigenous people left rock paintings on the canyon walls that visitors can still see today. These artworks show how people have been connected to this place for centuries.

The site can be reached through the national park, which offers various access points for exploring the area. Comfortable hiking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended, especially when visiting viewpoints near the edge of the canyon.

A cable car system crosses the valley, offering an unusual perspective of the canyon from above. This ride lets visitors see the full extent of the gorge without needing to undertake long hikes.
