Chicamocha National Park, National park in Santander, Colombia
Chicamocha National Park sits on a high plateau above a deep canyon in Santander and includes several viewpoints, walking trails, and a long cable car line. The landscape shifts between dry slopes with low vegetation and forested sections, while the river runs far below through the narrow valley.
The site opened in 2006 to protect the natural heritage of the region and commemorate historical events from the late 18th century. The central monument honors the rebels who stood against Spanish colonial rule and shaped the area.
The name comes from the Chicamocha River, which carved the canyon over thousands of years and flows through the entire area. Visitors today see a monument honoring regional identity and a museum with objects and displays about the Comunero Revolt.
The site lies about a 50-minute drive from Bucaramanga and opens slightly later on weekdays than on weekends. Those planning to use the cable car should allow several hours, as travel time and waiting periods can add up.
The cable car crosses a height difference of several hundred meters and offers direct views of the river and steep rock faces during the ride. On clear days, the view extends far into the hinterland, where small villages and terraces become visible.
