Santurbán-Salazar de las Palmas Regional Park

Santurbán-Salazar de las Palmas Regional Park, Protected natural area in Norte de Santander Department, Colombia.

Santurbán-Salazar de las Palmas Regional Park is a protected area in the Colombian Andes featuring high mountain forests and natural lagoons across varying elevations. The landscape includes diverse ecosystems with dense vegetation and water bodies that change character as you move upward through different zones.

The area received official protection status in 2013 through regional environmental authorities as a measure to safeguard the mountain ecosystems and water sources of the region. This designation marked an important step in conservation efforts for these sensitive ecological zones in northeastern Colombia.

The area contains 54 properties, with 30 under public ownership representing 78% of the total land, supporting local communities through water provision and environmental services.

You can reach the area through several gateway points in different municipalities and should prepare for mountainous terrain with changing conditions. It is wise to gather information about local conditions before visiting and bring proper gear suited to high altitude environments.

The area plays a vital role in supplying water to distant populations, with natural moss species here contributing to critical water storage and regulation. These plants filter and store water that then reaches communities across the region.
