Los Estoraques Unique Natural Area, Protected natural area in Norte de Santander, Colombia
Los Estoraques is a protected area in the Norte de Santander Department, where dry canyons alternate with freestanding rock columns. The differences in elevation create several climate zones, where cacti grow alongside mosses.
The area received its protected status in 1988, preserving rock formations that developed over thousands of years. Archaeologists later discovered traces of ancient civilizations in the form of burial sites and rock carvings.
The name Estoraques refers to the pointed rock needles that rise from the red soil like natural sculptures. Visitors can walk between these columns and observe the ochre layers that have settled over time.
Trails lead through narrow passages between the rocks and require sturdy footwear. Water and sun protection are necessary, as shade is only available in scattered spots.
Erosion continues to shape new columns here and constantly alters the forms of existing ones. Some rock needles wear caps of harder material that balance like hats on narrow stems.
