The Archaeology Museum of Sogamoso is a museum in the center of Sogamoso, Colombia, dedicated to the Muisca people who inhabited this highland region. The site combines indoor exhibition halls with an open-air area where a full-scale reconstruction of the Muisca Sun Temple stands.
The museum was founded in 1942 following excavations of burial sites and pre-Hispanic remains around Sogamoso. The original Sun Temple had been burned by Spanish forces in the 16th century, and the current reconstruction is based on evidence gathered during those early digs.
The Sun Temple reconstruction at the center of the site shows how the Muisca people organized their spiritual life around solar worship. The thatched roof and circular layout follow patterns found during excavations in the area.
The museum is centrally located in Sogamoso and easy to reach on foot from the main square. Allow enough time to visit both the indoor rooms and the open-air area, as the two parts together give a fuller picture of the collection.
The reconstructed Sun Temple is oriented so that at the solstice, sunlight enters through an opening in the roof and hits a specific point on the floor. For the Muisca, this was a practical way to mark the turning of the year and coordinate agricultural activities.
