Chagres National Park

The 129,000-hectare protected area contains tropical rainforests, mountains, rivers, and Lake Alajuela, supporting over 900 plant species and diverse wildlife populations.

Established in 1985, the park includes sections of the Camino Real trail, which Spanish colonizers used to transport gold across the isthmus of Panama.

The Embera indigenous community maintains traditional settlements along Lake Alajuela, preserving their customs and way of life within the park boundaries.

Visitors can access the park through roads leading from Panama City to participate in activities such as kayaking, hiking, birdwatching, and fishing.

The park provides 40 percent of the water supply for the Panama Canal operations through the Chagres River and Lake Alajuela system.
