Toluca, Industrial capital in central Mexico
Toluca is an industrial center in central Mexico located in a valley at around 2,660 meters elevation. The city spreads near the Nevado de Toluca volcano and is connected to the capital by several highways.
The Spanish founded the settlement in 1530 and granted it city status three years later. After independence, it became the capital of México State in 1830.
The stained glass at the Cosmovitral covers more than 4,000 square meters and shows people and animals in colored scenes. The market hall from the early 1900s was converted into a botanical garden during the 1970s.
A developed bus network connects the center with surrounding neighborhoods and with Mexico City. The high elevation can cause breathing difficulties for sensitive visitors, so it is wise to acclimatize slowly.
Monarchs migrate through the forests around Nevado de Toluca every winter and seek shelter from the cold. On calm days they can be seen hanging in large groups on the trees.
