Lerma Municipality

Lerma is a municipality near Mexico City that extends across the state territory and forms part of the Toluca metropolitan area. The area consists of several inhabited towns and rural zones with mixed residential and agricultural land use.

The region was originally inhabited by Otomi and Mazahua peoples before Spanish settlers established a colonial settlement in 1616. The name refers to a Spanish duke and marks the period of European expansion into this territory.

The Parish Church of Santa Clara in the town center dates to the 17th century and shapes the community's religious life. Around this church, traditional markets host local artisans and residents trading regional goods and handmade products.

The central town is easily reached via main roads connecting Toluca with surrounding settlements. Visitors should plan time for traditional markets that operate on certain weekdays and display local craftsmanship on-site.

Craft traditions here are particularly known for making rattles, dolls, embroidered textiles, and clay cooking pots called comals. Many of these items are still handmade using techniques passed down through generations.
