Lagos de Moreno, Municipality in Los Altos region, Jalisco, Mexico
Lagos de Moreno is a municipality in the Los Altos region of Jalisco state, Mexico. The area spreads across mountainous terrain and sits at an elevation of roughly 1940 meters, providing cooler evenings and mild days.
Hernando Martel founded the settlement in 1563 under the name Villa Santa María de los Lagos. Later it received its current name in honor of a local hero of the independence wars during the early 19th century.
The traditional name honors Pedro Moreno, an independence fighter whose family lived in this area. Visitors today find public squares and schools bearing his name, recalling his role in Mexican history.
The municipality lies about an hour by car from Del Bajío international airport. Travelers should be prepared for occasional rain showers in summer and cool mornings during winter.
Two cactus species grow exclusively in this area and nowhere else in the world. The dry slopes also provide habitat for deer and coyotes, occasionally spotted near rural areas.
