Chimalli Warrior, Colossal statue in Chimalhuacán, Mexico.
Chimalli Warrior is a red steel sculpture along Bordo de Xochiaca Avenue, depicting an armed fighter holding a shield and mace. The structure rises prominently and is visible from many points across the surrounding area.
The memorial was built in December 2014 to honor the Tenochcas who defended their territory during the Fall of Tenochtitlan. This gesture marked a modern recognition of a key chapter in aztec resistance history.
The monument draws on the indigenous past of Chimalhuacán, with its name rooted in the Nahuatl word for shield bearers and representing local identity. The warrior embodies the city's connection to its aztec roots and to the people who have inhabited this area for generations.
Access to the observation deck is available via an internal staircase or elevator, with both routes leading to elevated viewpoints. Comfortable shoes are advisable, and sun protection is important when visiting the upper areas.
The structure required hundreds of tons of material and specialized deep foundations to remain stable in this location. This engineering achievement is not immediately visible, but makes the monument a notable feat of construction.
