Hacienda del Lencero, Colonial estate in Emiliano Zapata Municipality, Mexico
Hacienda del Lencero is a colonial estate from the 16th century located near Veracruz, in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata. The two-story main building is surrounded by several outbuildings, including a long corridor filled with tropical plants and a bird collection.
Juan Lencero, a soldier under Hernán Cortés, established the estate in the 1520s along the main road connecting central Mexico to Veracruz. Over the following centuries it passed through the hands of several powerful owners who each left their mark on the property.
The estate was for centuries a meeting point for military officers and wealthy merchants who held power in the region. Rooms still display personal objects, furniture, and hunting trophies that give a clear sense of how these residents lived day to day.
The estate is located outside Veracruz and is easiest to reach by private vehicle or taxi. Paved paths connect the buildings across the grounds, so moving between the different areas on foot is straightforward.
General Antonio López de Santa Anna, one of Mexico's most powerful figures in the 19th century, used the estate as a personal retreat for more than a decade. Some rooms still contain furniture and objects linked to his time here, which sets this place apart from other colonial properties in the region.
