La Boca Formation, Jurassic geological formation in Tamaulipas, Mexico
La Boca Formation is a Jurassic geological layer in Tamaulipas consisting of reddish sandstones, mudstones, and siltstones. These rocks form thin strata visible across the landscape and contain fossilized remains from ancient times.
The formation developed during the Early Jurassic period, dating from about 189 to 171 million years ago in the Pliensbachian and Aalenian stages. Earlier research provided less precise dating until modern zircon analysis revealed the exact timeframe.
Scientists have collected over 8000 fossil specimens from this formation, providing substantial research material for paleontologists studying ancient life forms.
Access to the site requires permission from research authorities since fossil excavation and scientific study are restricted to qualified teams. Visitors should understand that casual collection or digging is prohibited and field study is reserved for trained specialists.
Among the fossils is Tamaulipasaurus morenoi, a reptile species that adapted to burrowing and underground life in ancient times. This specialized creature reveals how varied the habitats were in this ancient landscape.
