Punta Sur, Archaeological site in Cozumel, Mexico
Punta Sur is an archaeological site on the southern tip of Cozumel that contains Maya ruins situated within a large nature reserve. The location features several temples and structures from the late Maya period, as well as a lighthouse that rises from the highest point along the southern coastline.
The site was inhabited during the late Maya period and served as a port and trade center for goods exchanged between the islands and mainland. The structures show signs of continued use until shortly before Spanish arrival in the region.
The name refers to the southern tip of the island, and visitors can observe how the Maya used this location primarily for trade and religious ceremonies rather than daily settlement. The construction style of the remaining structures reflects typical features of the late Maya period.
The grounds are large and require comfortable shoes to explore the various structures and lighthouse, especially in hot weather. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense and the paths are easier to navigate.
The protected area serves as a crucial nesting site for sea turtles that come ashore at night to lay eggs. This role as a conservation zone makes the place more than just a museum of the past, functioning as a living habitat for endangered species.
