Parque Chankanaab

Parque Chankanaab is a nature reserve in Cozumel featuring a coastal lagoon, botanical gardens, and sandy beaches for swimming and snorkeling. The park also contains underwater sculptures and separate areas designed for different water activities.

The area became an official national park in 1980, establishing protected zones for marine species and regional plant conservation. This designation helped safeguard the ecosystem for both visitors and wildlife.

The name comes from Mayan words Chan, meaning small, and Kanaab, meaning sea, expressing how local indigenous traditions shaped the connection to this coastal setting.

The park sits on the coast and is accessible by car or taxi, with parking available on site. Visitors should bring sunscreen, swimwear, and water, especially during warm afternoon hours.

The park grounds contain submerged artworks created specifically for this location by sculptors. These underwater pieces create an unexpected blend of art within the natural reef setting.
