Bandera, Cowboy heritage town in Texas Hill Country, United States
Bandera is a small town in Texas Hill Country nestled along the Medina River, surrounded by rolling hills and open countryside. The settlement spans several blocks and features numerous horse ranches, saloons, and Western-themed shops that define its character.
Polish settlers from Upper Silesia founded the settlement in 1855 as a Roman Catholic community. The town later became a key stop on major cattle drive routes moving livestock through Texas.
The town holds the designation of Cowboy Capital of the World, a title reflecting deep ties to ranching culture and Western heritage. This status shapes the daily character of the place and appears throughout its shops, saloons, and horse ranches.
The town offers year-round rodeos, horse riding opportunities, and outdoor activities throughout the surrounding landscape. Visitors can choose from camping areas, guesthouses, and traditional hotels for their stay.
The annual Cowboy Mardi Gras festival draws thousands of visitors and brings spirited celebrations to this otherwise quiet town. This unexpected event blends traditional carnival culture with Western heritage in an unusual way.
