Cascade Caverns, Show cave in Boerne, Texas, US.
Cascade Caverns is a limestone cave system near Boerne that extends roughly half a mile through underground passages and reaches depths of around 230 feet beneath the ground. The passages feature flowstone formations, hanging icicles of stone, and floor deposits created through water and mineral processes over vast periods.
The Lipan Apache people discovered the cave system in the 1700s and left behind artifacts still visible in the chambers today. Later settlers explored and mapped the passages, eventually transforming it into a public attraction.
The Cathedral Room serves as the main chamber and draws visitors who want to see the natural mineral formations and rock shapes that developed over millions of years. Walking through this space, people experience the scale and variety of the cave's underground world.
Plan for a guided tour lasting 45 to 60 minutes and bring a light jacket since temperatures stay around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 18 degrees Celsius) year-round. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip because some passages have uneven floors and can be slippery in spots.
The cave is home to rare species found nowhere else except in one nearby cave, including a salamander and small crustaceans adapted to life in complete darkness. These creatures have evolved over millions of years with no need for eyes or pigmentation.
