Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge and natural landmark in Colorado County, United States.
Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in Colorado County that spans coastal prairie habitats with native grasslands, marshes, ponds, and woodlots. More than 260 bird species live here throughout the year.
The refuge was founded in the 1960s when the World Wildlife Fund acquired land to protect the coastal prairie landscape. In 1972, the area was transferred to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
The annual Attwater's Prairie-Chicken Festival in April brings visitors together to observe and celebrate the native ground-dwelling grouse through educational programs.
Visitors can use two hiking trails or drive a five-mile auto tour route to observe birds and wildlife. The best time to explore is between sunrise and sunset.
Staff conduct controlled burns each winter to maintain the prairie ecosystem and manage non-native plant growth. These efforts help keep the landscape functioning as it did historically.
